01 Feb 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn
By Lacey Elliott
I’m the girl whose boyfriend drives a big truck for work and I am very happy just sitting in the passenger seat. He also uses it to haul his camper and tow his boat. Two things that once again; I am happy being the passenger. This week I get a big ol’ truck all to myself. I have nothing to haul or tow so my time spent behind the wheel of this Ram Big Horn 4×4 will be spent running errands and hanging with friends. I know that I am not alone when it comes to driving our partner’s work truck to do these things. So let’s see how this truck does when it’s not working so hard.
STYLING: The Ram has always been one of my favorite trucks when it comes to exterior styling. Its sculpted fenders and bulging hood give it a very aggressive looking front end. The Big Horn comes with 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome power folding heated side mirrors and chrome tubular side steps. It adds a bit of shine to this masculine looking work truck. Not just for looks, the side steps make it effortless to climb into the driver seat even when I am wearing heals. This would be a must have for me when purchasing a truck.
INTERIOR: Winner of Wards 10 Best Interiors, I like that the inside is a balance of luxury and utility. I don’t feel like I am behind the wheel of a rugged work truck. The leather wrapped steering wheel is a bit thick for my grip, but something that I would get used to. The layout is simple and all the buttons and knobs are large enough that everything is manageable even with gloves on. As with any big truck I feel dwarfed sitting behind the wheel. What Ram does well is to ensure that everything is still within easy reach for both driver and passenger. Controls on the steering wheel also make life a bit easier. I know my boyfriend appreciates the large center armrest to keep all his work paperwork. I find it useful to store my purse and stash my iPhone and there is even room to spare.
ON THE ROAD: Taking this big truck on the road fills me with mixed emotions. On one hand, I do like sitting up high in a vehicle that growls aggressively when I put my foot down. People take notice and get out of my way. On the other hand, I get a bit nervous trying to maneuver something of this size in busy traffic and my heart starts to quicken when I need to park it. Thankfully, this trim comes with Parksense Front and Rear Park Assist so even though I can’t see all 4 corners, the technology lets me know if I get too close. I wouldn’t comfortable driving a truck of this size without either of these features. The ride is comfortable and the shifts are smooth. On the highway, I feel like I am driving a very large SUV. Not once did the suspension or steering remind me that I was in a truck. You can choose from an award-winning line up of engines. The Ram 1500 is the only full-size, light duty pickup on the market to offer a diesel powertrain. Upgrade to the Ecodiesel for an additional $4700 and you will save you some money at the pumps. The Ram 1500 is rated at 11.5/100km in the city and 8.4 on the highway. This new breed of diesel is quiet, clean and smoke free. This Big Horn crew cab is rated to tow 4,713kg (9,200lbs), which can handle most 25foot campers, or boats for weekend getaways. You can configure this Ram anyway you need and add on anything that you want. To the men out there whose lady might be driving, consider some of the creature comforts that would make the drive more comfortable for her.
