BMW 540i xDrive 2017 First Glance

21 Jan BMW 540i xDrive 2017 First Glance

Over the last few years, Mercedes, Jaguar and Audi have stepped up their game: challenging BMW to keep its position as the ultimate drivers car.  Klaus Fröhlich, Member of the Board of Management at BMW recently said “The BMW 5 series is the most successful business sedan on the planet. With the new generation of the car we are once again setting the benchmark in all areas.”  Will the latest 5-series be just what BMW needs to keep it ahead of those other luxury brands?  I have pretty high expectations and am really looking forward to my week in this car.

STYLING

With a combination of both strength and  graceful beauty, this BMW 540i xDrive is stunning.  The back lights reach close to the sides of the car, it giving it the appearance of a much wider and more muscular stance.  It sits low to the ground and for 2017 the exhaust tailpipes are placed symmetrical on both sides. Depending on the trim level and engine, tailpipes will be circular or trapezoidal.  A subtle change that I think, makes a big difference.

This  new 5-series has an extended silhouette and short overhangs.  The lines appear to give it an upward motion that make it seem like it is ready to lunge forward at any moment.

Being able to choose from thirteen colours and four different light-alloy wheels means that you can have your car you always imagined. Colour choice is big selling feature of most of us ladies and these options won’t disappoint.  A simple thing that allows you to have something unique and special.

A must have for BMW enthusiasts is the available M Sport Package that includes 19-inch M Double-Spoke Wheels with Mixed Performance Run-Flat tires, the M Aerodynamic kit and lowered M Sport Suspension.  On the inside, this package also gets you the new M Sport leather steering wheel, aluminum pedal covers and footrest as well as a delicious looking upholstered dashboard.

The  legroom has been increased by just over an inch for the passengers in the second row, but my two buddies still felt it the back seat is a bit snug. On our trip to the driving range everyone was impressed with the large trunk,  enough room for four golf bags.

By using an intelligent multi-material mix, BMW was able to shave off approx 100kg of weight from the previous model. This lighter model, the low centre of gravity and a balanced axle load ratio improve the comfort and driving dynamics.

I don’t like the feeling of the thick steering wheel in my hands and that is my only major complaint with this car. Otherwise, being in the drivers seat takes no effort and is pure joy to drive.
